Understanding How Air Conditioning Works Air conditioning is the process of cooling air and removing humidity from a room or a confined space. Its usage can be in a domestic environment like in homes in a room or in a commercial one such as in a business. Air conditioning is used to cool and dehumidify the surrounding in rooms filled with electronic devices that produce a lot of heat. To achieve a more comfortable interior environment this process is used. In a room or a car they use fans to distribute air. A refrigeration process is used to achieve cooling but at other times evaporation or free cooling can do. Desiccants, which are chemicals used to remove moisture from the air can also be used. Air conditioning can refer to any form of conditioning may it be cooling, dehumidifying or heating a room. In humidity control, reduction of the humidity of the air is done by refrigeration air conditioning equipments. Water vapor is condensed from the processed air by the relatively cold evaporator coil and therefore, water vapor is removed from the cooled air. In this way lowering of the relative humidity of a room is done. There is also a specialized air conditioner for dehumidification only. The refrigeration cycle consists of heat transportation from a colder location to a hotter one.

Removal of heat from places that are to be cooled and its rejection elsewhere is done by a medium which is the refrigerant. A fan is used to blow warm air in the interior which is supposed to be cooled across an evaporator. Caused by this the liquid part of the cold refrigerant evaporates as well causing the temperatures to be further lowered. The design of modern air conditioners is to recirculate cold air into the interior. They do not draw air into the room as it is with the others. The heat pump unit is a conditioner in which the cycle of refrigeration can be reversed causing heat increase instead of cooling the surroundings.

Normally they are also referred to as reverse cycle air conditioners. Than electric resistance heating, it is significantly more energy efficient. In milder winter climates heat pumps are more popular. Yet used with heat pumps are more conventional modes of heating such as natural gas or oil furnace since during the winter the icing problem is much more severe. These are usually used instead of heat pumps during harsher winter temperatures. Other types of air conditioning are evaporative cooling which are mostly used in very dry climates. They are also referred to as desert coolers or swamp coolers. Outside air is drawn through a wet pad maybe soaked in water. Free cooling is the other type and it uses pumps to circulate coolants such as water or glycol mix.
